Is develop on device done?

Probably wasn’t ever a good idea…
I tend to enjoy doing things directly on my device and when we had poor Internet connections, that meant locally too.

These days people look at me strangely when I mention it and you really have to contort yourself into making it work, far unlike when devices came with a BASIC interpreter.

I’d like us to keep this dream alive… but even I have moved to my…

New shiny MacBook Pro!

It makes a difference, but just like my experiences with AI so far, faster doesn’t save you time, it only enables More Things.

So I’m starting to try to contribute to BeeWare and learn AI and in particular local AI at the same time. This is why the MacBook was my choice.

I have already installed Android Studio and Windows 11 (for ARM) and know I could also install a Linux container and/or VM, therefore theoretically this device gives me full local coverage for “supported platforms” of things (through emulation if needed).

I have *already *also discovered you can’t afford enough RAM - I spent as much on this first Mac in a decade (and first Mac from new in much longer) - from what I keep trying on the AI front. It’s positive, faster, but not exactly overwhelming (and in one case I had an odd discrepancy between exactly the same model running extra slow on my Windows laptop but working, and moderately fast but struggling with its tool use on the Mac - I’m putting that down to “temperature” (randomness) and the quality of the harness).

I do still believe in *prototyping *and other rapid experiments still needing to be achievable initiated on-device (but not isolated from the cloud any more), and for that I am *concerned *by moves away from interpreters (ignoring the obvious in browsers) working with native code - we have an excellent working situation with Objective-C (and Java/Kotlin) but we will lose something in newer Swift versions which dictates a renewed effort.

I have started putting into practice some of the learnings of PyCon AU now, including working on a lot of the PEPs and learning uv too.

Recommendations for apps and strategies are welcome!

Let’s see where my flexible working hours take me…

PS. Just in time for my Clicks Power Keyboard to finally ship too! **😞 **
